Plant Description and Operating Era
The National Gypsum Rotan complex in Fisher County, West Texas, integrated a gypsum quarry and mine with a rock-to-wallboard production plant. Rotan supplied raw gypsum rock to National Gypsum’s regional wallboard and joint compound operations and also produced finished Gold Bond wallboard on-site. The Rotan complex reportedly operated across the mid-20th century U.S. asbestos era (approximately 1940s-1977, prior to the EPA ban on asbestos joint compound) with substantial mining, calcining, and manufacturing workforces.
